“If you could get rid of one of these days what would it be? ” The trainer asked as we sit on the floor looking at pictures that represent the creation story.

That’s an easy answer I thought. Rest. Who actually needs rest? As long as I get 6-8 hours of sleep each night, coffee can help me get by.
A few days prior to that we found out our ministry schedule for the month. We would have Sundays off after a three hour church service. Enough time to to sit at a coffee shop, explore the city a little bit and do whatever else came up. Some teammates were concerned there was no time to rest. Where I was filling up my time with things they were trying to find time to rest.

To be honest I took pride in this. Being able to work for hours, relying on coffee and just faking it until I would make it through the day. I began digging into this.
How do I rest?
What does rest look like?
I used to take naps in college. That is rest.
I laid by the pool all summer. That is rest.
Trying every way to justify my rest.

I felt convicted. God gave a day of rest and I was not taking it seriously. I wanted to explore, run, hang out with others, anything but sit and watch TV, take a nap or whatever the whole resting thing is supposed to look like.

A few days later I listened to this podcast and my mind was blown.

I went back to the hostel excited to tell my teammates all about it.

“You guys guess what? I do rest. I just do it differently.”

If you have ever heard of Myers-Briggs or the 16 type personality test you may have heard of the car model. For every type there is a driver, copilot, ten year old and three year old. For example, my type is ISFJ. Introvert. Senser. Feeler. Judger. These then break down into your car model. Your driver is literally what you live 80 percent of your life by. Mine is memory. Your three year old is how you rest.
How I rest you ask? By exploring.

Rest does not mean that I have to sit around and do nothing. Rest can mean hiking a mountain, reading a book, or whatever brings me closer to God. You see when God created this day, His people had to rely on Him fully. They had to trust that He would provide because they were not supposed to cook or do any type of work. So when I hike, I am not only trusting in Him for my safety but the views I encounter are bringing me closer because He created it. When I run, I am praying that He is with me to get me through that extra mile. When I hangout with others I can see Jesus in them and they speak truth into my life. Rest can look so differently for every single person and I think that is so beautiful.

“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

Updates:

FULLY FUNDED!! Praise Jesus and thank you all for the support you have given me to make it here.

We left Malaysia on Sunday morning and arrived in Bangkok, Thailand for debrief. We will be here until the 9th and then head to our ministry in Chiang Rai, Thailand. We will be working with S.W.A.T. which works with women who have been rescued from sex trafficking. They teach them self defense in addition to healing through rehabilitation, painting and other sources.

  1. Such a timely reminder to rest. Thanks Brittany!

Great to hear about your next ministry too. I’m sure the ladies will blessed by all of you. I was just reading and Ps.34:18 is so apt for your next ministry. May you all be the revival of the spirits of these ladies who’ve suffered brokenness in its worst form. Stay blessed!

  2. I totally hear what you’re saying!! My rest is very different than those around me. Because of having a large family, I had to learn how to do everything differently. This was a good reminder that it’s not wrong to be unique!

  3. “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40: 30-31

Sending you many prayers and happy thoughts on your birthday! You may be far away this year, but you will always be close to my heart.
